Project Details

This Hickory Hills home in northeast Illinois was built in 1952. Its existing vinyl windows were drafty, noisy and not very attractive, even though they were only installed 10 years ago. The homeowners reached out to Pella because they wanted to reduce noise, improve curb appeal and increase air flow with replacement windows.

Properly Installed Wood Windows Reduce Noise

The existing vinyl windows on this home did not perform well when it came to sound resistance and energy efficiency. The leaks and drafts in the seals made it easy for air and noise to move in and out of the home. Situated on a bustling street, these homeowners were tired of hearing honking, sirens, traffic and more from inside their house.

That’s why it was important to them that the new windows help soundproof their house. The wood windows they chose have multiple panes of glass that help dampen outside noises and provide additional layers of insulation to improve energy efficiency. With varying glass thicknesses, these panes help reduce different sounds at different frequencies. Choosing wood windows allowed these homeowners to capitalize on the material’s natural insulating properties, which also reduce sound transmission. Each of these parts, working together, improve the noise control in this home. Not to mention the fact that the new windows, unlike the old ones, are properly installed to ensure airtight seals that keep this home quieter and more energy efficient. In fact, during installation, there was a traffic accident near the house. The homeowner was amazed she didn’t hear it and realized the significant difference new windows made in reducing street sounds.

Windows with Grilles Enhance Curb Appeal

In addition to improving sound control and energy efficiency, the homeowners wanted to improve the overall aesthetic of their home. The existing double-hung and picture windows were fairly dull in terms of curb appeal. New casement windows with Prairie pattern grilles add design interest and further the style of the home. These window grilles completely transform the visual appeal and create a home these owners are proud to own.

Casement Windows Open the Living Room to Fresh Air

The existing windows were a combination of double-hung and picture styles. In replacing their windows, the homeowners felt this would be the ideal time to change styles of windows and improve ventilation. Compared to picture windows which don’t open and double-hung windows which partially open, the new casement windows offer better air flow as each window opens fully. They easily operate with a crank that folds away when not in use. When open, the windows welcome in a natural breeze that refreshes the living room. Plus, screens are located on the interior, meaning they don’t interfere with the operation of the window and they stay clean longer as they are protected from the elements.
