Project Details

The homeowner of this 1998 St. Charles, Illinois home wanted a more durable front door that would require minimal maintenance and update the look of the entryway. He turned to Pella to help with his front door replacement project and was delighted with the resulting transformation.

Low-Maintenance Fiberglass Front Door Improves Durability

The main reason for replacing the existing front door was wood rot and deterioration. Not only did this affect performance, but it also made the entryway appear old and weathered. Given that minimal maintenance and durability were essential requirements, the Pella rep recommended a new fiberglass front door for this entryway. Fiberglass resists warping, dents and rot. The new door can withstand extreme Midwest weather, keeping maintenance and upkeep minimal and performance dependable. Envisioning a dark-stained door, the homeowner was especially excited to hear that fiberglass front doors are available in wood-grain finishes, achieving the look of wood without the maintenance.

Traditional Front Door Creates Grand Entryway

In addition to swapping the front door material, the Pella rep recommended redesigning the transom and sidelight configuration. To create a grander entrance like the homeowner wanted, they removed the transom above the door and installed a 96-inch-tall door instead. Adding height to the door gives the appearance of a larger entry and makes the space feel more impressive. The homeowner also opted to replace half-light clear sidelights with full-light decorative sidelights. The decorative elements provide more privacy than the existing door did and enhance curb appeal. The arch panel on the upper portion of the door along with the clavos and hinge straps also add to the style of this traditional front door.
