Project Details

The homeowners of this 1950s Chicago, Illinois home were looking to update the windows and doors leading from their dining room to outdoor patio. The existing products were drafty and old, dating the appearance of the home.

Wood Windows and Doors Improve Energy Efficiency

The top priority for this project was improving energy efficiency to help reduce the utility bill and add comfort to the home. With leaks and drafts, the homeowners could literally feel air moving in and out of the seals of the existing windows and doors. It was evident that conditioned and heated air from inside the home was able to escape through the cracks. Vice versa, cold or hot air from outside was entering as well.

Wood is a natural insulator which makes the replacement products very efficient and helps the homeowners decrease their energy costs. Many people overlook the importance of installation in terms of the performance of a window or door. These homeowners now experience the difference firsthand. Their properly installed products are tightly sealed to help prevent leaks and airflow from affecting the indoor temperature. Their dining room is now comfortable year-round no matter the weather outside.

Modern French Doors with Windows Update Aesthetic

While improving energy efficiency was the primary goal for this project, updating the aesthetic was important too. The new black windows and modern patio door create a bold statement. The old French door had grilles that created the look of divided light. The new door features expansive glass and minimal frames for a contemporary, sleek look. Against the light-colored brick, the black patio door and windows really stand out as a design focal point. They create striking contrast that adds to the visual appeal of this backyard patio. Overall, this replacement project significantly enhances the look of this space.

Working with the Pella Team

The existing double-hung windows on either side of the door were originally mulled to the hinged patio door, even though you couldn’t tell that from the outside. That meant to install the replacement products properly, it was not as simple as a pocket replacement. The team had to get down to the studs and rough opening for both the windows and door. While this project wasn’t easy, the homeowners were impressed by Pella’s ability to get the job done effectively and in a timely manner. They now get to enjoy energy efficiency improvements along with beautiful windows and doors.
