Wind and Storm Damage Affects Iowa Homeowners

posted on August 18, 2020 in Pella Windows & Doors of Eastern Iowa

Storm Damage to doors and windowsCentral Iowa isn't commonly known as a hurricane-impacted area. Yet hurricane-force winds ripped through towns across Iowa on August 10th as part of a strong line of storms known as a derecho. The August storms left many Midwest homeowners cleaning up damage to their homes and properties and over a million lost power.

Cedar Rapids was one of the hardest hit cities with many homes sustaining major damage to roofs, windows, and siding, but damage was seen from Des Moines through the Quad Cities. Downed trees along with strong winds caused much of the large-scale damage but homes can be impacted in a number of different ways and some damage is not as easy to spot. Homeowners commonly have their roof and siding inspected after a strong storm, but many don’t realize that roofing and siding companies usually don’t inspect for damage to windows and doors. Even minor damage can cause leaks in your window components that can lead to drafts, fogging and material deterioration, all of which can increase home energy costs.

As Iowa homeowners assess the damages and begin work to repair and rebuild, Pella Windows and Doors of Eastern Iowa can help.

What to do if you experience storm damage to your windows and doors:

  1. First, be cautious around any broken glass. Survey the window area to make sure any broken glass is cleared to prevent injury. Ensure damaged windows and doors are secured.
  2. Contact your insurance agent to report damage. Your insurance agent should be able to give you details about your homeowner's policy and any coverage you may have.
  3. Call Pella to set up an in-home consultation. Even if you don’t have Pella windows and doors in your home, our professionals are here to help.
