The windows of a home are more than just a structural build-in. They serve a necessary function, but should also be aesthetically pleasing. As important as windows may be, how they are designed and decorated is just as important. A bare window is an empty canvas, so cue?window treatments.

Curtains, drapes, shades, blinds, valances — the options for window treatments are abundant, as well as the many ways you can mix and match them. A properly dressed window can be the difference between a polished interior or a drab one.

Here are some descriptions of window treatments to help you decide what will work best for your home.

1.Curtains

Curtains come in several styles. Most of the time they primarily serve an aesthetic purpose, but if you need privacy or you would rather not have a lot of sunshine streaming through a window, you can purchase black-out curtains. Though curtains are frequently characterized by sheer or lightweight material. You could hang patterned cafe curtains in the kitchen window, a sheer pair in the bedroom or even a boho curtain in the living room. Just remember the material you choose will affect the amount of light that shines into your home.

2. Drapes

Drapes are a heavier and thicker curtain. They are like black-out curtains but with heavier material. They are usually layered with more lining, which makes them ideal for blocking out light. If you are wanting to darken a room, which could give the room a richness and sense of elegance, choose drapes.

3. Blinds

Blinds are normally crafted from harder materials, such as metal and wood. Blinds feature individual slats or vanes. Wood blinds or shutters are great for those seeking light control, thanks to their horizontal slats or vanes, which can be rotated to regulate the amount of sunlight let into the home. Some of the most popular blinds include:

Panel blinds: Panel track blinds are best reserved for oversized windows or sliding glass doors. They are usually wider in width and can be fabric.

Venetian blinds: These are standard blinds that feature only horizontal slats.

Vertical blinds: Like the look of Venetian blinds, the vertical variety has up and down vanes. They are a great solution for bay windows.

4. Shades

Shades are more of a classic design and, in turn, are available in several assorted styles.

Roller shades: Roller shades are made from one piece of fabric or material. When the shade is drawn, it coils completely around the tube at the top of the window. They are labeled as “solar” shades due to their ability to block out UV light.

Woven shades: Woven shades have a screen like style that helps diffuse light and gives privacy from the outdoors. They are made from bamboo and jute.

Cellular shades: Cellular shades have a honeycomb-shaped design which makes them the most energy-efficient. The shape of these shades traps the air, keeping heat out in the summer and keeping heat in in the winter.

Roman shades: These shades have curving folds or soft pleats. They stack evenly when pulled up and are often best for blocking out light. They intertwine with design and function, and look great anywhere.

5. Valances

Valances can be paired with all the window treatments mentioned. A traditional valance usually has some elegant material meant to decoratively conceal the curtain rod, yet modern versions (such as a wooden valance, or cornice) also exist.
