Project Details

Built in 1932, this historic home in Roanoke, Virginia is over 90 years old. While its charming character remains intact, the windows throughout the home were beyond repair. The homeowner sought a solution that would not only enhance the safety of their home but also improve functionality. Collaborating with our Pella North Carolina experts, the goal was to find replacement windows that met these criteria while offering additional benefits.

Vinyl Windows Deliver Exceptional Performance

After careful consideration, we recommended Encompass by Pella replacement windows. Safety was a concern with the old windows because they were rotted and decayed. This led to poor energy efficiency as drafts and leaks allowed air to seep in and out of the house. The new vinyl windows improve strength and energy efficiency. With fully-welded sashes and frames, they are strong and durable. Plus, the multi-chambered frames help slow the transfer of heat and provide extra support to the windows. This contributes to a more comfortable indoor environment while reducing energy costs.

Double-Hung Windows Require Minimal Maintenance

The existing windows were not only performing poorly but also looked old and weathered. The chipped and faded paint was an eyesore that diminished the overall curb appeal of the home. With the replacement windows, the homeowner was pleased to know they’ll never need painting or refinishing. The vinyl formula stands up to Virginia’s climate, allowing for excellent weathering and color retention.

In addition, the new windows minimize maintenance by allowing for easy cleaning. Each double-hung window has two sashes that both tilt inward. This makes cleaning a breeze, especially on the upper level. The homeowner doesn’t need to pull out a ladder to reach the second story from outside the house. Rather, they embrace the safety these windows offer by cleaning both sides of the windows from inside the home. The homeowner now spends less time on maintenance tasks thanks to the replacement products.

White Windows with Grilles Maintain Historic Beauty

While the homeowner wanted to improve the safety, energy efficiency and functionality of their windows, they still hoped to maintain the charm of their historic property. With this in mind, we mimicked the look of the existing windows. The homeowner selected white windows to honor the original design. Like the old windows, we added a simple grille pattern to the top half of each window. This furthers the traditional window aesthetic, maintaining the style of the house while freshening the look.

This historic window replacement project was successful in addressing the homeowner’s safety concerns and providing enhanced functionality. It also improves energy efficiency, minimizes maintenance and refreshes curb appeal without compromising the charm of the home. These Virginian homeowners were impressed by how smoothly the window replacement process went and love the look of their new products.
