Accentuate Your Home's Architecture

Posted on August 23, 2021 in Pella Windows & Doors of Virginia

Virginia is known for its historically styled homes. Taking it all the way back to the 1700s many of these home styles have English influence with an American spin. Across Richmond, Charlottesville and South Charleston, you can find many beautiful homes fitting the standard of Cape Cods, Tudors and Colonials — and maybe even a mix of a few.

The Pella Windows & Doors of Richmond team has just what you need to get the best window and doors for your home.

Windows & Doors for Colonial Homes

Truly one of the most quintessential styles on the East coast, Colonial-style homes can be found in abundance across Virginia. These homes are large and square, with beautiful windows, a brick exterior, and often white or dark green accents. While these homes are beautifully simple and symmetrical on the outside, the interiors are beautifully designed with elegant touches.

Double-hung windows are the most popular window choice. Many are paired with a transom window above for additional natural lighting. The trim is a hipped roof and can be accented with mouldings, medallions or other beautiful carvings. Casement windows are often considered as well. And of course, when it comes to grilles, many homeowners go with the classic Colonial style grille pattern.

The front entryway is one of the focal points of the home’s exterior. Traditionally Colonial homes have a single front entry door, accented by transoms and even a half-circle accent window placed above the door. Patio doors with glass and Colonial-style grilles are common for other exterior doors.

Cape Cod Windows & Doors

A true American-style house, Cape Cod style takes design elements from Colonial-style homes resulting in a simple and functional residence. Following true to the modest design style, these homes have a steep roof with gables. On the roof, dormer windows can be found. Dormer windows can either be functional or just a showpiece.

Many Cape Cod homes are outfitted with double-hung windows with coordinating trim and shutters. Double-hung windows served a great purpose before central air conditioning. These windows have the ability to open from the top and the bottom allowing for an abundance of airflow throughout the house. Finally, these windows often have a traditional 9-over-6 grille pattern or 6-over-9 pattern.

Indoor-outdoor spaces weren’t too common when Cape Cod homes were first being built, but many have been renovated or designed to have patio spaces. A sliding patio door is a great fit, or for extra appeal, French or hinged patio doors can really make a statement.

Traditional Tudor-Style Elements

It’s hard not to love a classic Tudor home. With exposed timber and stucco or brick woven in between, this traditional English style is one of the most recognizable home styles. A true mix of Craftsman, Prairie and Colonial, Tudor-style homes are beautifully designed inside and out.

Windows in Tudor homes are traditionally wooden with a beautiful interior wood stain finish. When it comes to window type, many casement windows or bay windows can be found. Accents can be added by way of transom windows, too. One thing very unique to Tudor homes is the choice of a diamond grille. This angled pattern is an accent that can’t be beaten. Colonial style or a square grille pattern also works well in this home type.

Just as wood was the most popular material for windows, you’ll find that that rings true for front entry doors, too. Many homeowners choose a solid wood door with arched glass at the top for an accent. Pair with side transom windows to complete the look.
